Former hedge fund manager Michael Steinhardt and his wife, Judy, have pledged part of their $200+ million art collection for a loan on a Manhattan real estate project. They chose 20 paintings and drawings, including five by Pablo Picasso and one by Jackson Pollock, as collateral for a loan from JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, according to New York state records.
The loan was made for an investment in the former American Stock Exchange building, which Steinhardt bought for $65 million in cash earlier this year. - ARTFIX

We were expecting to hear a speech by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) about inequality in America. We were particularly intrigued to hear the speech because Cantor has previously characterized the Occupy Wall Street movement as a “mob” that wants to “divide America.” But, shortly after noon today, Cantor abruptly canceled his speech at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. His office complained that the University was making his speech open to the public, but Cantor only wanted to speak to a “selected audience.” (Cantor’s decision followed plans for a large march and protest prior to the speech.) Cantor had claimed that the University of Pennsylvania changed its attendance policy at the last moment, thus forcing him to withdraw. But in a statement released moments ago, the University explained that the speech was always open to the public. “The Wharton speaker series is typically open to the general public, and that is how the event with Majority Leader Cantor was billed,” a statement read. Speaking of income inequality, we wanted to share a few important facts with you. Since the late ‘60s, the middle class share of income has fallen in tandem with the decline rate of union membership in America. Meanwhile, the top 1 percent has experienced a precipitous rise. If Cantor were truly interested in reducing income inequality, here are five proposals we offered that he could embrace:

1. Promote Unionization
2. Rein in CEO Pay
3. Fair, Progressive Tax Reform
4. Increase the Capital Gains Tax Rate
5. Promote Economic Mobility Through Education

Occasionally you will see a story that just makes you shake your head in dismay about what it says about the human condition. For me, at least, so it is with a story about a guy in Michigan who won $2 million in the state lottery TV show called “Make Me Rich,” but nevertheless remains eligible for food stamps — and continues to use his food stamp card to buy his food. The man in question, Leroy Fick, says he doesn’t feel bad about still using taxpayer money to buy his food. Fick’s $2 million lottery winnings don’t disqualify him from a program that is supposed to help the poor because, under current law, food stamp eligibility is based on gross income and lottery winnings are considered liquid assets. As a result, a guy who has more money in the bank than the vast majority of taxpayers is happy to have those taxpayers pay for his groceries. What a greedy jerk! I recognize that this is an extreme case, and obviously the “liquid assets” loophole needs to be fixed. But what it really sad about this story is that a guy who has had a stroke of incredible good fortune has absolutely no regrets about taking advantage of that loophole, and thereby taking advantage of his fellow citizens. Why doesn’t “Lucky Leroy” Fick have a conscience that causes him to realize that using his food stamp card under these circumstances is just wrong?

Members are coached to use savings, coupled with loans and training, to start tiny businesses. Jane learned to sew, left prostitution and used her savings and a small loan to buy a sewing machine. She began buying secondhand wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses for about $7 each, and then cutting them up to make two or three smaller dresses. Jane’s business flourished, and she used her profits to buy a small home in a safe suburb and to keep her children in school. Her eldest daughter, Caroline, became the first child in the family to graduate from high school and is now taking computer classes. The intellectual star of the family is Anthony, the second child, who is ranked No. 1 in his class of 138 pupils at a good boarding school with much richer students. Anthony, a star soccer player even though he has no soccer shoes, hopes to go to college and become an engineer. In connection with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, U.S. television networks are planning an ambitious schedule of retrospectives and original programming. Here's a network-by-network breakdown ....
CBS
CBS News will be live at Ground Zero beginning Friday, Sept. 9 with The Early Show and the CBS Evening News broadcasting live from Ground Zero Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Evening News anchor Scott Pelley will lead off the division’s live Sept. 11 coverage beginning at 8 a.m. Bob Schieffer also will anchor Sunday public affairs show Face the Nation live from the site, while 60 Minutes will present an 9/11 themed broadcast.
Robert DeNiro – whose Tribeca Film Festival grew out of the ashes of 9/11 – hosts CBS’ 9/11: 10 Years Later (Sept. 11, 8 p.m.), an update of French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet and ’James Hanlons original documentary that contained the only known footage of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center. (The Naudet brothers were shooting a documentary with the firefighters from Engine 7 in Lower Manhattan at the time of the attacks.) The new film includes updates with firefighters who appeared in the original film as well a tour of the ongoing construction efforts at Ground Zero.

Diane Sawyer heads back to Good Morning America to anchor the program with current co-host George Stephanopoulos beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11, with Robin Roberts at Ground Zero. David Muir, Christiane Amanpour and Katie Couric (who was anchoring NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer ten years ago) also will contribute to the broadcast. Later that night (10 p.m.), newsmagazine 20/20 will have Remembrance and Renewal: 10 Years After the 9/11 Attacks.

A muscle-bound firefighter who appeared as Mr. March in the 2011 FDNY calendar was arrested for allegedly assaulting his transsexual girlfriend -- a stunner who was famously booted from "America's Next Top Model." Taylor Murphy, 28, is charged with assault, criminal mischief and criminal obstruction of breathing for allegedly attacking Claudia Charriez two weeks ago in front of Flashdancers, a Midtown jiggle joint, and again later at a nearby hotel. Murphy was arraigned last night in Manhattan Supreme Court and was freed without bail. Murphy's gal pal, Charriez, 30, who lives in Los Angeles, made it to the semifinal round on "America's Next Top Model" in 2006 before she was disqualified because she was born a male. She told The Post yesterday the attack began when Murphy became jealous during their visit to the Times Square nudie bar, where several men asked her for a lap dance. "A couple of guys saw me and wanted me to dance for them, " she said. "Then the owner came up to me and asked if I wanted to work for him. "[Murphy] said he thought I was flirting with those guys." They argued, and Murphy allegedly became violent on the sidewalk, shattering her cellphone on the ground and dragging her down the street by her hair, Charriez said. "He pinned me into a telephone booth and strangled me, then let go and started crying." The gender-bending model broke free from her 6-foot-3, 220-pound boyfriend, jumped in a cab and fled to her hotel on West 35th Street. Murphy was waiting when she got there and began biting, punching, kicking, slapping and choking Charriez, cops said. "I told him to leave and that I didn't want to see him again," she said. "It set him off, and he slammed me into the bed and strangled me again with so much force." Charriez fled to a friend's apartment, but Murphy allegedly followed her and banged on the door until the girls called the cops. "I was covered in bruises. Stockholm bans advertisements for street art show

Stockholm's city council has been criticised for forbidding advertisements featuring street artSTOCKHOLM. The Swedish capital refused to allow advertisements for the annual “Art of the Streets” event, which took place from 13 to 14 August, to be put up in public spaces. National theatre company Riksteatern planned the event and its organisers described the decision as censorship. It rented an aeroplane to fly over Stockholm, carrying a banner that read: “Graffiti can't be stopped.” Similar advertisements were permitted last year, but despite the difficulties in marketing this year's event, the number of visitors almost doubled, reaching 5,900. “Art of the Streets”, which is planned to travel to other Swedish cities, consisted of shows and workshops, plus a panel discussion on Stockholm's zero tolerance policy regarding graffiti. - Clemens Bomsdorf

On Friday night, Standard & Poor took the unprecedented step of downgrading the nation’s long-term sovereign credit rating to AA+ from AAA, claiming that “the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short” of what is “necessary to stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics.” In explaining its decision, the rating agency argued that the Budget Control Act Amendment of 2011 did not do enough to slow down government spending and specifically condemned Republicans for turning the debt ceiling into a political football and refusing to consider increasing taxes or allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. But the Obama administration also raised questions about the agency’s ruling, pointing out that it had made an astounding $2.1 trillion error by projecting “the nation’s debt as a share of gross domestic product to reach 93 percent by 2021,” fully 8 “percentage points higher than the figure administration officials believed the rating agency should have used.” S&P — admittedly no oracle, given its negligence in failing to identify “the risks of subprime mortgages during the housing bubble” — conceded the mistake, but concluded that the revisions didn’t “meaningfully affect” the conclusion. Since two other ratings agencies have thus far maintained United States’ AAA rating, however, “many analysts say it’s not so clear that it will deliver any immediate shock to financial markets or to consumers.” - Igor Volsky

The massacre in Norway was the work of a man with extreme right wing views who hated Muslims, police said this morning. Officers found a series of raving internet posts by 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik, who was arrested for gunning down children on the island of Utoya yesterday. Six foot tall and blond Breivik is reported to have arrived on the island of Utoya and opened fire after beckoning several young people over in his native Norwegian tongue. Reports suggest he was also seen loitering around the site of the bomb blast in Oslo two hours before the island incident.

okay lats nite was the Opening of The Pittsburgh Biennial and I got to see how the FOR TWOS worked. best part was the 4 kiddies laughing and giggling and playing with the pile of foam rubber and fabric and plastic and tarps and throwing them up in the air and hiding under the quilts (why didnt I make a video) the adult's relational reality was pretty good (see photos). I wonder what Franz Erhard Walther would have thought? his FOR TWOS have no subject matter on the fabric and realyl clearly are a utility mint to focus sing the peoples on eachothers. so like I added pop culture (IMPORTANT RESEARCH aka Blah Blah Blah) subject matter on the fabric inbetween to them - for better or worst. maybe my FOR TWOS about sex and therapy do that but somehow they weirdly called for a third.my mother kept running over tio show me the FOR TWO she was wearing and introduce me to the person she FOR TWOed with. actually the first one FOR TWO I made was three (i needs to revisit that impulse) remember that was right before for my big New York City audition for BRAVO's WORK OF ART. it was was Lifesavers for the Flood in Indonesia included a FOR ONE for the photographer because HELP should be photographed? thats what makes it valueable? thats why you have to pay for therapy? so now I'm thinking all of these need a third because philanthropy altruism art therapy is only valueable when itz published? ADVERTISE WITH ALTRUISM. I dunno the process continues. and the blog suddenly called for my psycho babble. yikes. NOW June 11th 2011 eveven ten am so sew so I better add some friggin prayers (for the camera)
